Meet Oscar
Oscar C. Donahue III, widely recognized as "Oscar of New Orleans," is a celebrated artist and jewelry designer whose vibrant creations have become emblematic of New Orleans' rich cultural tapestry. Born on November 25, 1955, in Kansas City, Missouri, Oscar's passion for art was evident from a young age. At just five years old, his first drawing, a dolphin, elicited enthusiastic reactions from family and friends, igniting a lifelong dedication to artistic expression.
Oscar pursued higher education at Washington University in St. Louis. Following his studies, he embarked on a career in nonprofit fundraising, working with organizations such as the March of Dimes in New York. However, the allure of creative endeavors eventually led him to New Orleans in 1984, where he initially served with the United Negro College Fund. On weekends, Oscar began sketching portraits at the French Market, immersing himself in the city's vibrant artistic community.
The birth of his daughter inspired Oscar to explore jewelry-making, leading to the establishment of "Oscar of New Orleans." His handcrafted pins and earrings—featuring motifs like pink flamingos, saxophone players, and crawfish—quickly gained popularity for their whimsical charm and cultural resonance. Oscar's work has been a staple at the French Market for over three decades and has been showcased at prominent events such as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
